Exploring how newly qualified dentists perceive certain legal and ethical issues in view of the GDC standards and how they feel it influences their daily practice

The aim of the session will be to discuss how the GDC guidance and the set standards for the dental team are perceived and understood by newly qualified dental practitioners and how the guidance and the standards influence clinicians’ decision making.

  • Introduction to the research project on the perception of the GDC 'Standards for the Dental Team' document' and its impact on newly qualified dentists
  • Background information about the GDC and the 'Standards for the Dental Team Document
  • The current teaching of legal and ethical topics from undergraduate level to CPD requirements
  • The perception and understanding of the regulatory document
  • The clinical and non-clinical impact of regulation as identified in existing literature as well as the findings of this research project. Themes such as 'fear', 'morale', and 'the business of dentistry' will be discussed
  • What does the future hold?
